Letter to Sister Carrie: 26 May 2001

Carrie,

You know me. Tim does too. I am but one voice singing in a growing chorus of citizens that can no longer bear to stand by and watch impotently as the Government of the United States routinely administers these sadistic, brutal, and unforgiving sentences upon our fellows; sentences aptly described by one of their chief creators, Mr. Eric Sterling, as the greatest tragedy of his professional life.

The pain of these horrifying incarcerations has been born alone by those who now endure them for far too long. They, and their families, are slowly coming to know us, to depend upon us, and, to their great relief, realize we are here, and here to stay. We have seen the lives of our fellow citizens shattered by the war on drugs, and we are reaching out to them, beseeching their forgiveness for our apathy.
