August 2001: Maria Herrera Disappeared - Please Help

Maria was deported under INS regulations some time in January this year. No information on her fate has come to the Committee's attention. An informant familiar with INS proceedings believes Maria was put on a plane, alone, bound for Bogota, Columbia, and disembarked with no one to meet her and nowhere to go. Bogota is a destination notorious for unprovoked violence. There is reason to fear for Maria's safety.

Maria lived in the United States from the age of 11. She has no friends or family members in Columbia. Her family resides in the United States.

Addresses of family members forwarded to the Committee include the following:

John Viafra (Maria's brother)
11780 S.W. 18th Street
Apt. # 530
Miami, FL 33125

Parents or possibly a sister:
14851 S.W. 169 Lane
Miami, FL 33187
or
15550 S.W. 109 Terrace
Miami, FL 33196

Letters addressed to all three locations three months ago with stamped envelopes for forwarding to Maria produced no results. Viewers in the Miami area who wish to help by making contact with the above addresses for some word on Maria are asked to do so urgently.

Maria Herrera took responsibility for obtaining the participation of Spanish speaking women in the work leading to The Tallahassee Project. (For the story prior to her deportation see Appendix 11, pp. 88-89.)
